One of the most important things you can do for your pet, is protect them from Heartworms. Heartworm Disease is a potentially fatal disease which is prevalent in our area, as it is transmitted via Mosquitos. The heartworms mature over a 6 month period and reside in the lungs and heart of both dogs and cats.
You can prevent heartworm disease in your pet, by administering a preventative either on a monthly basis, or with a 6 month injection. Prior to starting the medication, it is important to have a screening test to ensure that he/she is not currently infected.
Heartworm prevention should be provided year round. Most of the preventions available also control intestinal parasites and several will help treat fleas as well. It is important to speak with your veterinary team to determine which preventative is best suited for your pet.
